Who Is At Risk For Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a confusing and devastating disorder marked by extreme exhaustion and is not helped by sleep or rest. Physical and mental activity causes the fatigue to worsen and reduces the ability of its victims to function to almost nothing. CFS has stumped physicians and researchers even since it was first discovered. Chronic fatigue syndrome has been shown to attack women more often than men, adults in their forties and fifties more often than younger or older individuals and has been known to run in families. To date there is no cure, no guaranteed treatment and almost no specific idea of why it affects whom it affects.

Women More Often Than Men

Chronic fatigue syndrome is diagnosed in women almost four times more often than men although medical teams do not know why. It was considered that maybe hormonal changes in women in their forties and fifties could be linked to the onset of CFS but studies have not yet proven that to be the case. It could be that women and men both suffer equally from chronic fatigue syndrome but that women are more likely to see their doctor and men are more likely to keep quiet about their suffering.

During The Forties And Fifties

People in their forties and fifties are most likely to get chronic fatigue syndrome although people of all ages, including adolescents, have been diagnosed. Very few cases have been seen in children under the age of 11. The personality of the individual may also have something to do with the risk of developing chronic fatigue syndrome. High-achievers who are faced with sudden mental challenges or physical ailments are at most risk of being hit with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Is It Hereditary?

CFS has been noticed to run in families although it is not contagious which leads medical researchers to believe there may be a hereditary genetic factor to developing chronic fatigue syndrome. Of course this may be misleading, as most risk factors of CFS can be, since doctors may be likely to consider chronic fatigue syndrome as a diagnosis if a member of the patient's family has also been diagnosed. Remember that doctors usually run a whole slew of test to eliminate all other possibilities before settling on a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome.

While some factors have been associated with the onset of chronic fatigue syndrome, until the medical community has a better idea of what causes CFS, these potential risk factors really don't offer much help to individuals looking for ways to protect themselves.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Barr Epstein Virus Potentially Related

Researchers continue to examine possibilities of a chronic fatigue syndrome Barr Epstein Virus connection as both ailments appear to present similar symptoms, which are inter-related to both ailments. Some of the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, Barr Epstein Virus are known to cause such as mononucleosis. Similarities have also been noted in their dormancy period as well as their method of attack, leading studies to believe they have a stronger relationship than originally thought.

The main difference between the two is in the diagnostic methods used in their identification. The Barr Epstein virus is detected through testing and can be positively identified. There are no laboratory tests that will point an accusing finger at the ailment, yet a person with at least four of the symptoms for at least six straight months, can be classified as infected. Along with chronic fatigue syndrome, Barr Epstein Virus is one of the more difficult problems to diagnose, mostly due to many medical professionals to recognize them.

Researchers know that the triggers of chronic fatigue syndrome often seem to appear out of nowhere and since they are different in everyone, it is difficult to point to any one problem. Physical and emotional stress or viral infections have been shown as a leading presentation of people with the problem, and many also suffered from mononucleosis. This is pointing researchers into the direction that chronic fatigue syndrome, Barr Epstein Virus are related, believing the virus is a trigger to chronic fatigue.

Stress is basically emotional and physical strain that we experience as a result of our response to pressure caused from the outside world. There Are Many Signs of Stress

Some people don't realize they are stressed until it is too late and they are diagnosed with a life threatening disorder caused by stress, such as ulcers, high blood pressure, heart problems, high blood sugar, and hypertension. It is important to see signs of stress in yourself so that you can correct it.

Easy to Notice

These signs are the signs of stress that are easiest to notice, and usually the ones that are easy to fix.

You snap at your kids more than you used to and you spend less time with your family. You have a lot of headaches, your neck and back constantly hurt and you want to collapse when you come home. You skip family functions to get some alone time. You find that even small things are harder to do and find a small problem that usually wouldn't bother you now feels like a huge fiasco. You feel a deep depression when the alarm goes off in the morning and your gut wrenches or you feel physically ill when faced with certain tasks, like going to work, a meeting, or hosting a dinner party or family get-together. You would rather stay locked away in your house than go outside and face the world and want to be alone more than usual. You have developed a nervous habit like biting your nails, overeating, or tapping your foot. You have developed a nervous twitch. (Your friends or family may have to inform you of this one; you may not even notice it.) You regularly have an overwhelming sense of dread and want to sleep more than usual. You have the need to throw thing, punch people or objects (whether you would or not), or tear thing to shreds. You fantasize about tying up and gagging a co-worker or boss.

Dealing With A Repetitive Stress Injury

Anyone, or anything, can get a repetitive stress injury and a repetitive stress injury will usually show some kind of signs before it sets in completely. The best way to avoid a repetitive stress injury is to know what causes a repetitive stress injury and what you can do to avoid it. Once you learn what steps can be taken to reduce a repetitive stress injury then suddenly some of the things you see in everyday life begin to make sense. When you see the secretary wearing a wrist brace, or when the state Department of Transportation closes down bridges for work every year, or why oil and other lubricants are used on certain metal parts you will understand why those things are done and why those precautions against repetitive stress injury need to be taken.

A repetitive stress injury is when something is constantly in use and then eventually just breaks down from the constant wear and tear. Probably the best example for human beings is a condition called carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a pain the wrist and forearm area that makes moving your wrist extremely painful. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is most likely to affect women than men and is the result of putting your wrist in a position it was not meant to stay in and then keeping it that way for extended periods of time. The best position for the wrist is straight out but, for example, a guitar player who plays every night could develop carpal tunnel syndrome because of the way the wrist is bent while playing. There are exercises and precautions that can be taken to prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome but if nothing is done in a situation like this then it could develop and it is painful.

Over The Bridge

Probably the best example of repetitive stress injury to non-humans is when a bridge collapses due to the parts failing on it. This is why states spend so much money to work on bridges every year. While the cars are driving on the bridges the metal parts the bridges are made of are constantly bending and moving with the weight of the vehicles. If this bending and weight is not accounted for every so often then at some point the bridge will fail and collapse. We recently saw an example of this in Minnesota where a bridge collapsed after years of use. It was later found out that there were warnings about repairs needed on that bridge and that is indicative of what stress can do to mechanical parts.

Oil and other lubricants are used to reduce the repetitive stress injury to things like the engine in your car. Oil lubricates the moving parts in your engine and without that lubrication the metal on metal action in your engine will quickly cause your engine to seize up and could cause a need for major repairs. Anywhere there is a lot of metal on metal moving connections you will usually see a lubricant. Next time you are at an amusement park take a look at where all of the metal beams meet and where everything moves. Chances are you see lubricant put on to reduce repetitive stress injury.

Dealing With Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome

Stress is a psychological and physiological response to certain events that take place in the course of our life and which upset our personal balance in some way. A certain amount of stress is considered as being healthy and normal, but there is a certain point at which it becomes out of control and potentially dangerous.

Types Of Stress

There are a number of different types of stress that one can suffer from, one in particular being post traumatic stress syndrome. Post traumatic stress syndrome is almost always caused by some sort of psychologically traumatic event involving actual or threatened death or serious injury to oneself or others. This can include anything from violent personal assault, car or plane accidents, or military combat, for instance.

Signs And Symptoms

There are certain signs and symptoms of post traumatic stress syndrome that you will most likely notice, and it is critical to pay attention to these signs and symptoms, as they are basically warning signs and are telling you that you should seek professional help before your condition becomes too serious or dangerous.

There are basically three categories of symptoms of post traumatic stress syndrome. The first involves re-experiencing the event, and this is actually the main characteristic of the condition. Most commonly in this case you will have powerful and recurrent memories of the event or nightmares in which you see it happen over and over again.

Also, in rare cases, a person may actually enter dissociative states, which may last anywhere from a few minutes to several days or even more. People who suffer from this disorder often tend to develop a dependence on drugs or alcohol, and may become depressed as well.

Treatment

There are quite a few different methods of treatment that are typically used for post traumatic stress syndrome, and in particular cognitive behavioral therapy and group therapy tend to be quite effective here. Both are often performed by therapists who are experienced in a particular type of trauma, such as rape counselors, and they will also often combine this with exposure therapy, in which the patient relives the experience under controlled conditions in order to work through the trauma and relieve themselves of the stress.

Post traumatic stress syndrome can quickly become unmanageable and out of control, and so it is important for persons suffering from the disorder to seek medical help and treatment as soon as they possibly can.
